Will this scholarship interfere with other financial aid I'm already receiving (or will receive in the future)?
It should not. This scholarship complements other financial aid packages. It was designed to be non-competing. Contact us if you have questions.

Will poor academic performance negatively impact my scholarship?
Most definitely. We check your progress toward your degree and toward teacher certification every semester. If your NJIT or Rutgers-Newark cummulative GPA falls below 2.8 we cannot keep you in the program and not only will you not received new scholarship funds, but you must also repay all funds you have received through TECHS-NJ to this point. While we will try to stay aware of your performance during the semester, it is your responsibility to notify us (contact us) immediately if you are having academic problems. If you are having trouble with a course, we may be able to steer you in the direction of resources to help you. Also, it is very important to communicate with your professors and your advisors.

Whom do I contact with questions about what classes I have to take?
The advisor for NJIT undergraduate teacher education program students is Prof. Jim Lipuma. NJIT students also have an advisor in their major. For Rutgers-Newark students, Prof. Arthur Powell  will serve as your teaching advisor. Once you are accepted into the Rutgers-Newark Department of Urban Education Teacher Certification Program, Prof. Rosemary Steinbaum will also advise you. It is also good to keep Prof. Bukiet and Ms. Clark informed of your course plans.

What if I decide I don't want to teach in Newark?
This is a choice you must make for yourself. There are advantages of teaching in the Newark Public School system in terms of continuing mentorship and professional development. Furthermore, the program guarantees successful TECHS-NJ Noyce scholars a teaching job in Newark. However, you MUST teach in a New Jersey high-need school district or else you must repay all TECHS-NJ Noyce scholarship monies received.

When do my obligations to TECHS-NJ Noyce end?
You must teach math or science in a New Jersey high-need district high school for two years for each year of scholarship moonies received. These years must be completed within 6 years of receiving your final TECHS-NJ Noyce scholarship funding.

Do I have to be a resident of Newark to teach in Newark?
No.

For any question(s) please, contact Joya Clark.
